There's the real issue, IMO. Not the amount of the one time fee,
but the open ended agreement allow magazines - and I say magazines, not
just S&T, as all magazines seem to be doing this - keeping publishing
rights open ended. For exmaple, there was a fight between National
Geographic and some of it's photographers over use of images in the
National Geographic CD-ROMS. I do not know how it was resolved (if
ever). However, $50 for one time use in a magazine is today, sadly, good
moneyin some circumstances, but for an open ended rights agreement, no,
it's not, I think.
The real issue for me when dealing with anything or anybody in
the publishing industry, is the same people & companies who want open ended
rights agreements on images are often the first ones to complain or use the
law to slam down on illegal use of images they own rights too. Talking to
photographers in other fields, it's this seemingly double standard that
seems to upset some people the most.
