Re: [APML] Newbie Scanning Stuff
Hi All
I'm a newbie too, and quite frankly some of the names i see posting here
are quite impressive (and intimitading). Your work is awe inspiring.Your
question is one i have too. I get great slides, but my scans are not quite
as good. I'm using Olympus OM cameras with Elite Chrome 200 (and 400 when i
can find it) mostly and some Fuji Sensia too. I'm using a PIE 1800u
slide/neg scanner and Photoshop LE 4.0. Im gonna say right out that im
understand that the scan is only gonna be as good as the equipment that
scanned it. One of the first things i plan to do here in the next week or
so is upgrade my PIE's, twain driver from Cyberview to Silverfast AI 5.5. I
downloaded a demo version from their site and man what a difference over
the Cyberview driver. I also plan on getting the full Photoshop 6.0 too.
The LE is ok, but its really limiting with what you can do with it. Another
tip i picked up off a general photography site was to scan the slide with
the emulsion side up to the scanner head. It seems to help with the
sharpness.
Looking forward to hearing some responses too about some of the right gear
to use also.
Here is a recent scan i did of the alignment on May 5th near my home in the
Annapolis, MD area. Its a 30 sec shot with a 28mm wide angle len at f/2.5
attached to an Olympus OM-2N (i did the hat trick). I shot it on Elite
Chrome 200 pushed to 400 and push processed. Its was purely accidental, as
im not competent enough to think of that on my own. I forgot to change the
ASA setting on my OM-2n back to 200 when i put in that roll of film. I
asked the lab to push it when delevoping to compensate for my error. It
worked out. The slides look great. I also bracket out of habit, so it was
likely i was going to get on decent shot. I have enough of this shot to
stack but i dont have the software to do it yet. when i do, i will give
that technique a try.
Heres the scan
