Anyone know of any better way to combine these images so that the star images look better?

Yes, first you combine all the stars and throw away the comet image in Photoshop by using the lasso (feather it). Then you make an image of the comet by registering all the individual comet images. Use the rubber stamp tool to eliminate the extra stars in the tail of the comet, keeping only one set. Then, pull out this comet image with the lasso tool and place it into the "hole" in the original stars image with the layer function in Photoshop. I have done this successfully with this comet. You can see the result at: http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/ap-ug/lst

Go down to the last series of images. You will see two comet photos side by side. The first one shows the result and the second one shows the original with all the multiple stars (in my case they were different colors of an LRGB image).
