Roland's comment reminds me of a conjunction of the
planets with the Chicago police. In 1998 (or was it 99?), I was in Chicago and
there was a Venus-Jupiter-Moon conjunction that I was determined to photograph.
The hotel staff wouldn't let me go up on the hotel roof, so I wandered
around along the street looking for a clear view of the planets. Finally found a
spot and just as I finished snapping off a few with my suspicious looking
telephoto, was accosted by a couple of burly guys in a police cruiser. They were
very cordial once I explained what I was doing (and they could see that there
were a couple of bright objects near the moon). Wanted to know if they would be
able to see Jupiter's moons in their 10x binocs. Pictures turned out OK even
though I didn't have a tripod.

Going to a darker site will definitely help. Good luck in your future images. This photo reminds me of my first astrophoto of the Pleiades. I found an old abandoned farm outside Cleveland where I lived at the time. I pulled up the drive, set up my tripod, snapped several 30 second shots on Tri-X film, and then the Sheriff pulled up and said I was trespassing. He didn't understand what I could be doing with a camera at night since everybody knows that you can't take pictures in the dark. Roland Christen |
