It's still very impressive visually, but the nucleus is not quite as
blue as it was last month. In 16x70 binocs, the tail was easily apparent
and out of the field, so I'd stay under 800mm if you want the whole tail
or most all of it. The tail remains quite a sight visually and on film.
I shot it with the Epsilon (530mm f/l) last Friday night, but I couldn't
get the STV to stay on the nucleus and the shot is a bust. However, the
tail appears to be more than halfway across the frame (30 minutes at
f/3.3 on Provia 100F), so this is a pretty good composition at this f/l.
I would think that anything 600mm or less would work just fine, and if I
get out again this weekend, I may shoot it again with the Epsilon.
Sincerely,
Jon Kolb
