[APML] OT: Possible Impostor Virus from <philip@astrocruise.com>
Folks,
Sorry about the completely OT message, but two people have told me that
they received an e-mail from my e-mail address containing the KLEZ
virus. It is possible that others on APML may receive such an e-mail. If
so, I apologise, but it's not me, it's an impostor that has picked up my
e-mail address and is using that as the originator address. IMO, this is
the nastiest and most malicious form of virus propogation. If you do
receive such an e-mail I'd be grateful if you are able to help (without any
undue trouble) by saving the full header info and sending it to me. It may
be possible to do a traceroute on the true originator.
A missing sign-off line should indicate that the e-mail is not from
me. Also note that I always sign-off as "--Philip", not "philip". My
standard sign-off line is:

I run Mcafee VirusScan at maximum strength (including Heuristsics). I have
the latest scan engine and virus definitions: McAfee VirusScan 5.21.1000,
virus definitions 4.0.4201, scan engine 4.1.60. I do receive plenty of
viruses but they are deleted automatically upon reception by
VirusScan. Also I run a complete system scan at 7:00am each day. Also I
use Eudora, not Outlook, which makes it much less likely that my system
would get infected or pass on viruses.
Even so, after receiving these reports I ran a complete low-level DOS scan
on the system. This, McAfee tech support assure me, is the final cast-iron
check for any residual viruses on the system. Everything shows my system
to be completely clean.
I think I can say without hesitation that the virus e-mails are not coming
from me. Even so I apologise if you do receive one and would appreciate a
copy of the full header info if possible. If you would like to follow up
please could you e-mail me privately: <philip@astrocruise.com>
Thanks, and my apology for taking your time,
--Philip
