I'm not sure about in general, but fireflies definitely *do* fly well
above 6 feet off the ground.  Perhaps they only do this in wooded
areas where they are somewhat protected from flying predators.  During
the summer months, we often sit around a friends wooded back yard and
near the trees they fly high enough I can't reach them.
