Tony,
I gave it a try on my shot of the Pleiades just
like you said. I got three different histograms. The differences
were pretty minor but noticable, I don't know how big the differences you got
were. I got means of 34.57, 35.28, and 38.09 for the original, the
conversion to grayscale, and the deletion of saturation
respectively.

That's strange.... how did you
reduce the color information down to B & W? Maybe that's where we are
getting different results. I did mine by either converting to grayscale and
throwing out the information, or reducing the saturation to the point that
there was no color left. I'll try this again when I have some time... right
now I am doing battle with M63... the bright star next to it wiped me out and
my cropping was terrible... not a good night... : - (
