I tried your experiment with your Lagoon image
<http://astrophoto.com/Lagoon.htm>. My results are at
<http://www.unc.edu/~pedit/lagoonboth.jpg>. The luminosity histogram
for the color image is on the left and the histogram for the gray scale
image is on the right. They look the same to me and the statistics are
roughly equal. What am I missing?
