"Some PolaColor Insight users may prefer to use PolaColor Insight only
for capturing uncorrected ("raw") image data dirrectly from their
SprintScan scanner. They crop, size, scan and save the image with
PolaColor Insight, then open the image with an ICC image-editing
application for adjusting color balance, changing sharpness, etc."

In other words, you make the scanner software do nothing to "correct"
the image, and do it yourself in another program like PictureWindow or
PhotoShop.  The images look really strange the first time you see them -
slides are almost black, negatives are almost white - but once you get
used to starting the process this way, you find that there's a lot more
information in your scanned files than there was when you allowed the
scanner to "correct" the image for you.
