Thanks for your suggestions for raw scanning. I accidentally
discovered the method when working on a comet image in order to see the
nucleus and faint ion tail with only one long exposure. Before I had my own
film scanner I used to send out all my negatives to be scanned and they
never did raw scans. However, they would scan the negative as a slide (see:
http://www.homestead.com/mstecker/comethb.html ). This was of great help
with comets and objects with great brightness ranges like M42. However, the
raw scan works even better (see:
