That's OK.  Yes, it is in print mode where the slot widens to accept prints.  
Thanks for being thorough and checking but I am pretty sure that the 
calibration is failing.  The scanner takes in the calibration card, mulls over 
it for a few seconds and spits it out with the "lamp calibration failed" error.  
The calibration dialog shows that the first two steps (1. Calibration card
loaded, and 2. Calibration in progress) complete succesfully as indicated 
by the checked boxes, but it never gets to the end of the third step --
Calibration completed.

I think I am just about at the one year anniversary of this purchase (need 
to check the exact date ).  Maybe HP will be kind enough and fix it  for free 
or a reasonable charge.  We'll see...
