If you own an ST-4 you can directly measure the sky background with it in real time.  See:

Once you have correlated the measured sky background with the effect it has on film, then you can judge the exposure needed while in the field.

I've found that sky background has a very large effect on the quality of astrophotos (no surprise).  I've noticed that a one magnitude difference in sky background makes an absolutely huge difference in the ability to record the faint stuff.
