That is in part because Reeves/WillBell didn't expect to sell more than a few thousand copies of WFA. There are a bunch of very nice Schmidt camera images in there from Kent Kirkley. There's no way Kent could've collected anywhere near the rates implied by the above calculator.
However, the best-selling Backyard Astronomy Guide should be able to pay full rates.
I wonder what Gleason got for "The Hand of God"?

You intend to defray more than a few percent of the tens of $K you've invested in equipment (some of which you won't get back when you sell), not to mention 1000's of hours of your time? If you did consulting in your professional field (whatever that is), you could get, what, $100/hour? We'll be *lucky* (or good business people) if we get more than $2/hour for our AP work.
