    I think you misread the tutorial.  Division is used for digital CCD/DSLR images because they are linear, but the flat should be subtracted with film images.  I would go more with the tutorial on DBE than the flat-fielding.

From what I gather, division is better than subtracting.  You don't do both.  At least this is how I have interpreted "Flat-Fielding in Film Astrophotography" by Carlos Milovic. 
 
 
I could be wrong though since all this stuff is new to me.
