As fas as I have used DBE, I found that the tolerance paramether isn't as critical as you might thing. You just have to keep in mind that a good value is such that rejects as many stars as posible, without rejecting background values. If the samples are large enought, the noise in the image don't affect the result.

I didn't get what you are trying to say... :-S
Could you explain it a little further?
Anyway, the sample boxes work this work by taking the average of the pixels that are not rejected. Then, a two dimensional function is interpolated between each sample box. The only property of this function is that it is smooth... very smooth. There are no vigneting patterns assumed by default (Correct me Juan if I am wrong ;-) )
