Re: [APML] Schmidt Shot: IC443 to NGC2174

neat widefield Chris.

It it hard to do well with CCD due to those bright stars in it.

Your film shot is nice in that regard.

It does seem a bit red though.

Some time back I shot that same area with my ST10XME and a 150mm camera lens
using an Halpha filter

The Ha filter helped to tame the bright stars: it attenuates the stars but
lets the nebulosity shine through.

here's that shot.

I also made a tricolor emission line image of that area using [SII], Ha and
[OIII]. I used the strict wavelength ordered palette and the CFHT palette
both. I was disappointed in the colors though

sometimes the tricolor eline images look great but sometimes they are just
not too moving.

I had some gradient issues due to the wider bandwidth of the Astrodon eline
filters (6nm) versus my usual Custom Scientific 3nm ones. But I like the way
the Astrodons expose faster. But I clearly get better contrast and fewer
gradients with the custom sci ones. I also get star haloes and other
artifacts from the internal reflections caused by the sandwich design of the
Cust Sci filters.

So few of these objects are available in the eline palettes that it mostly
winds up being a voyage of discovery for me.

best regards
Richard
