I have the Marumi DIFF filter. As far as I saw in the
slide, it doesn't show any haloes (I haven't processed
the images yet), but the diffusion effect is quite
soft. It seems that the DIFF2 gives better results.

Did you average the filtered and the normal shots?
Look   for an article that Marco Lorenzi wrote about
this technique. He uses the lighten blending method to
combine that kind of set of images, and the results
looks very good.
Give it a try, if you haven't yet. =)
