RE: [APML] Epson 4870 review

I had the predecessor to the S20, and have the Epson 2450 Photo scanner, a
predecessor to the 4870. The Epson wins, hands down, no contest. Just
remember that, for scanners, any D-Max claims are referenced against NOTHING
in the light-path. When talking of D-Max ranges with film, the baseline is
'film-base + fog' (used to be about 0.3 density units). ... then you take
the marketing hyperbole into account.

Based on the release notes for the latest versions of Vuescan
(www.hamrick.com) the Epson 4870 has infra-red cleaning capabilities which
my older 2470 doesn't. [standard disclaimer for both Epson and Hamrick]

I'd suggest you guys sample some astrophoto scans before buying. Some of
these scanners with outstanding spesc just don't do so well with dark
astrophotos on thin negatives. Does HP still sell the S-20? That's a great
entry level scanner if it's still made; and does up to 5x7 prints too.
