I haven't heard a lot about jpeg2000 since Forgent announced that they
owned a patent and were demanding license fees, about 2 years ago.

Forgent apparently backed down a bit on the patent and granted certain
portions of its claim as "free."

The patent politics behind this "standard" makes my blood pressure
rise, so I'll stop here.
