RE: [APML] OT (slightly) M82 Reds
Chris,
That is really a very nice shot of M82. Thanks for the information on
combining shots. I can't wait to give it a try with Tech Pan and a Supra 400
shot. The Supra is nice but a bit grainy, hopefully this will help with that
problem.

Hi all,
I used a technique I developed for film imaging when combining red filtered
tech pan images with color supra 400 shots for this CCD image. I wanted to
share with you the result so you can try it too on your film shots. The
method combines a deep Ha or red filtered shot with a white light color
image. Rather than just add them and combine using the LAB method, (Ala
Gendler), I first adjust both images in PS to be same background density,
and a good appearance for to be a decent shot on its own. Then I paste one
over the other (after registering!). I combine the layers with lighten.
What happens is really cool - the white light image has the bright stars,
blue nebs and stellar core. The Ha shot has the bright Ha regions and a
host of IR stars. Combining with Lighten does this: the brightest of both
shots becomes the final image. So in that final image, you get it all - a
great white light color image with enhanced Ha nebs and lots of neat IR
stars all over. Here's a (gulp) CCD shot using this exact technique. I
hope you can use it on your film shots!
