 Hey Chris...

     Nice image... no matter how it was acquired. <g> The technique is very effective, and actually works intuitively... compared to many other digital processing steps.

     I've experimented with the 'Lighten' mode, too. I did a twist on Jerry's 'Real Unsharp Mask' technique, seen here:

 -- but I added the blurred image in 'Lighten' instead of 'Subtract'. This did 'sharpen' bright details some, but also smoothed the background in an even larger amount... enhancing spatial data while removing noise! The image I'm referring to could use better processing, not to mention more exposure time, but is located here:

     Maybe tweak the above original a little more in curves, then add a blurred copy in 'Lighten' mode... I'll try your technique too, if I ever evolve into filtered exposures.
