RE: [APML] Webcamin' nightscape - film image
Tossing in my two pennies.
I don't think it will blow away, just be something different. There will always be folks out there (old and young) who like the more traditional methods. There will always be budding film astrophotographers like myself who will want to share results, ask questions, and look for feedback. The difference is that the questions will be all old hat to a lot of the astrophotographers here, debated and discussed and resolved long ago leaving just a simple answer to give.
For me astrophotography is exciting stuff..something I've never done before and so I'm charting new territory. But at the same time there's places like APML to tell me where I screwed up or what I got right. Kind of like how you guys aren't sure whether to be happy or sad, I'm not sure whether it's a blessing or a curse to be able to compare my results to 10-year-old astrophotos. But in the end it doesn't matter. If I come to a point where I'm satisfied with what I've accomplished and want to try CCD imaging or whatever, then so be it. There will always be folks who come after who, like you and I, will want to try film.
So yeah. Film astrophotographers may eventually have to join the SCA, but I think they'll still be around. :)

Hi Chris -
I don't either.
What I find interesting though is the amount of traffic lately on the APML.
Granted the server was down for a while but even for the past 5+ months, the
posting as slowed to a dribble compared to what this list use to be like.
At first I thought maybe it was the poor winter weather and people weren't
getting out but I also read the SBIG list...... its not quiet over there. I
think it might be a sign of the times? Less and less people are shooting
film these days. It also seems that a majority of newbie imagers are buying
a CCD camera instead of getting into film. I see numerous "I'm new to CCD
imaging" posts in various lists.
I don't want to start another "should we accept CCD discussions" thread on
the APML, but I'm afraid this list will dry up and blow away within a year
if we don't. Just my $.02 thoughts...
Chris
