RE: [APML] GM-8 advice needed

Hi Alan:

Yes, that is correct... the DSBS fits into the mount saddle and provides
dovetails to accept a DUP on each side. You'll need to check a few things
out however first. I believe the GM-8 system has a smaller side-by-side
version that uses different plates; in my view another reason to use a G-11
saddle to utilize the longer plates for stability. You can mount both tubes
in rings and not add the DUP's on top if you choose, using two plates
instead of four. If you wish to use adjustable guide rings in lieu of
regular tube rings then you'd require a Losmandy male-to-male plate so the
guide rings could mount to it. This sounds complicated but it's not really
once you've researched what's required. Weight is always an important
consideration and it's not inexpensive to buy all the plates at once either.
An imaging friend of mine had a GM-8 set up just like you're investigating
and had great results with it using two refractors.

Feel free to contact me off list (the address is on my web site); I'd be
happy to review this further and can send some photos of my new system that
will clarify things somewhat.

Hey Kirk,

So, if I read this right, I would need a DSBS and 2 DUPs to set up a
side by side system? I couldn't see much detail in your shot. Possibly
because I have never seen so much equipment loaded on one mount. :-)

Thanks for the help,
Alan
