Re: [APML] New M101

Steve,
I made a 16x20 print, a somewhat larger FOV than the picture on the web
site. At that scale, the galaxy is about six inches across. The whole
picture was made from about 2 inches of film, so it's a 10x
enlargement. Grain is visible if you are within 12 inches of the
print. Stars look good nearly to the corners.

I especially like all the Ha regions in this galaxy. Also, the fact
that the center is not overly bright.

This is my first print on the high-contrast Ilfochrome paper, CPS.1K.
Previously I used CPM.44M which is an RC paper, and less shiny. I like
this paper, polyester really, much better.

As I learn more about darkroom techniques, I become more convinced that
this is a great way to print astrophotos. Slide film and Ilfochrome
paper make a great combination, if your goal is a large picture to hang
on the wall. Plus, Ilfochrome is archival if it doesn't get too much
UV. I'm still working on adjusting contrast, by the end of the summer
I should have that all working. It takes contrast control masks.
