Hi Steve,

Looks to me like it's way underexposed. M101 has fairly low surface brightness, and with 400F unpushed @f/11, 2.5 to 3 hours wouldn't have been excessive if the sky could handle it. I've only got away with 90min exposures on brighter targets at times with unpushed 400F @f/11 because light pollution "helped" somewhat by fogging the film. And at that, I could only record the brighter inner regions of the galaxies very well ;o(

I'm guessing that the banding is caused by your scanner having a problem with the slide being too dark. Looks like you may have also bumped the curves up a bit much for the galaxy's core region.
The tracking looks good, especially considering the conditions. Hard to say about the focus, but I think it's OK too. Perhaps the stars are blown out a bit by aggressive curves?
