Yes it really is portable. The secret is having the Dec axis come off the RA
base so they can be carried separately. The RA base and dec go together like
a dream, so there is no compromise in the design. The counterweight bar and
weights are actually the most demanding of effort for me. That and putting
the scope on the top plate. I got a 54 inch pier when I first ordered mine
and that turned out to be a bit too high for me (I'm also 6'1"). Unless you
are going to use it with a VERY long refractor, I would recommend the 48
inch pier or one that can be adjusted (like the ATS).
