Actually, it's the same for me. I never use the little rings and even though the spools fit loose, there is enough friction to hold them to the bottom of the tank. I've always thought the clip rings were for people who like to shake their tanks or invert them for agitation. I usually just twirl the spindle and bump the tank on the table to knock loose bubbles.
Not knowing how Thom was going to use his tanks, I thought I'd mention the little clips. If the newer reels are tight around the spindle, all the better. One less thing to keep track of in the dark!
I thought I saw somewhere in a brochure or something that they were making the reels interlock together now so the spindle wasn't even necessary. Must have been one of them dang innovation dreams.........
