I'm sorry I don't understand. Why is this a problem? Don't you want it to
show the final curves adjustment?
If you have a curves adjustment layer on an 8 bit image in Photoshop, and
you save it as a Photoshop file, without flattening the layer, and then you
open it in Picture Window, the curves layer won't be applied to the image.

Layers only work in 8 bits.

Right.

Yes, this is right, but you can't do anything to it in layers. This is the
background image, which is the only layer you can have in a 16 bit image.
The background image is the image.

Yes, this is all correct. You shouldn't have a layer in 16 bits, so there
is nothing to flatten.

If the image is in 16 bits, you simply use Image > Adjustments > Curves.
You can't do a Curves adjustments layer in 16 bits.

When you say you "have the curves in the 'Layer' palette", what exactly are
you talking about? If it is a 16 bit image, you should have only the image
in the layers palette.

I must be missing something here... Are you saying that you have a 16 bit
image with a Curves adjustment layer on it? Are you sure it's 16 bits? And
it has two layers in the layers palette, the background and a curves
adjustment layer?
