Michael,

I purchased an Epson 1280 printer a few months ago,
after considering all of the reported issues,
including slowness and clogging, and after comparing
it to other printers in this price ragne (about $500)
and quality range.   The blacks are astounding, which
is important for astrophotography prints.  Although
it's slow, I think this is partly why the print
quality is so good compared to other brands.  I've had
only a few clogging problems, but I'm willing to put
up with them based upon the excellent quality of the
prints.   The other issue that made be buy the Epson
was the longer lasting inks, although time will tell. 
My biggest  "complaint" is that the printer uses lots
of ink, but I don't print that often, so I'm happy
with it.

I can't tell you about the bubble jet printer, but
others may know.
