Re: [APML] New Provia 400F (RHPIII)

Hi Don,

Actually, Provia 400F hasn't changed since it's introduction. For the past few years most Fujifilm websites have actually had the datasheet up for the older Provia 400. It's just been in the past few weeks that the correct 400F datasheets became available on most Fuji websites. Previously I had only found the correct datasheet on the UK and German websites.

In fact, the German Fuji site has had the correct 400F datasheet for a couple of years, but only on the German-language version, while the English link from the same site took you to the older Provia 400!!!

Subject: [APML] New Provia 400F (RHPIII)

All Film Guys,
After the recent, and on-going fiasco with Kodak Supra 400 Film changes, I just discovered that Fuji Provia 400 changed sometime last year.  This change looks like it was for the good!

A message from John Boudreau listed the current data sheet URL (thanks, John).  I got it and found it does not match the data sheet I had for Provia 400F (RHP) that I downloaded on May 31, 2002.  The data sheets do not have a date on them that I can find.  The old data sheet is listed as AF3-799E for Provia400F (RHP).  The new is AF3-066E for Provia400F (RHPIII).

The new Provia 400F (RHPIII) data sheet is here:
http://www.fuji.fi/documents/13/provia_400f_AF3066E.pdf
OK, what are the differences?
1. The RHPIII has a new peak in the blue range at about 470 nm, but zero blue at 500 nm.  The green layer has slightly increased levels at 500 nm that probably compensate. Reds look essentially identical.
2. RMS Granularity Value is now reduced to 13, from 15.  This should be reduced grain.
3. Resolving Power is up with the new film.  At 1.6:1 contrast (low) it is now 55 lines/mm compared to 40.  At 1000:1 contrast (high) it is now 135, up from 125 l/mm.

My film testing of Provia 400 was done in mid June 2002, on what turns out to be the new RHPIII version.  The testing I did on both 35mm and 120 roll were all RHPIII.  Since I never had any of the old film, I have no test comparison.

At least Fuji marked their film properly, following the marking they specify in their data sheet. ... Something Kodak should learn to do.

I like Provia 400F (RHPIII) and use it for some of my astrophotos, along with my supply of old Supra 400.

Don
