RE: [APML] Film Scanner Survey

Minolta Scan Dimage III

It's an excellent scanner for the money. I got mine for about $275. The
Minolta software is capable, but it takes a bit of practice and finesse
to get the best possible scan. Many people use this scanner with Vuescan
for exacting work, and I agree it can pull out a little better data from
difficult slides/negs. The user interface is cumbersome to use, and I
like Minolta's index scan feature.

About all I can say negative about my unit is that, being more or less a
consumer version of the Scan Elite II, it is missing the Elite II's
DigitalICE and GEM. It also does not have an infrared defect mapping
capability. These three tools together really make getting clear,
dust-free scans, a breeze. With the Dimage III, I have to be more
careful about dust, and ready the blower-brush and static cloth to wipe
away offending particles.

Dimage III is a great scanner overall though. I'd recommend it.

I'm shopping for a good film scanner. What scanner do you use?

Thanks,
