Dale,

True the Dmax is not as good but let's put it in perspective. All my 
work has been scanned on a SS35ES with a Dmax of only 3.0, so 3.4 isn't 
that bad. If you know the limits of your scanner then you time your 
exposures to match it. The thing to do with slide film is to expose 
long enough so the sky fog reduces the density of the least exposed 
parts of the film.
