Re: [APML] Photography From Orbit
For weather satellite views of Europe I use the excellent university of ulm
server:
http://meteosat.e-technik.uni-ulm.de/meteosat/index-latest.html
Most usefully it can also generate ani gif movies of western europe's cloud
cover movement in IR - great for determining wether (sic) its going to be
clear or not on any given night:

For other euro sat services check out:

N American coverage and other parts of the globe too:

Cheers, Paul.

Peter,
You made a very interesting observation. The more efficient cutoff lighting
lights the ground rather than the sky. The space photographs show the area
that is lit rather than the number of photons sprayed into the sky.
Basically you can only rely on the space view to show areas where there are
few people (who light up the area). For astrophotography, you need both
dark and transparent skies. Space photos won't tell you much about
transparency. Infrared imaging may show water vapor, so look at local
weather satellite views. You will have to "go there" to check out the
promising sites you find from space photos. I'm sorry I don't know a source
for the photo coverage of your area.
Good luck finding a good spot,
Don
Hi All
The NASA night time image of London shows the light pollution from the
London orbital motorway, the M25, as a long fine line circling the capital.
Interestingly the motorway is most obvious on the image where the lighting
is from full cut off anti light pollution fittings. Other sections of the
motorway lit with "spray the light everywhere" fittings is hardly
noticeable! Does anyone know if there are any other recent images of SE
England taken from space so I can locate the best astrophotography site ?
