I think the problems are related to the cover glasses used on the detectors. They are rarely properly multi-coated to reduce reflections. Compounding this is the use of filters that are not exactly plane parallel and don't have proper multi-coatings. My own filter wheel has a poorly made green filter that gives me multiple green overlapping images in a Maltese cross pattern.
