I usually prefer not to increase contrast too heavily.
Rather darken the the picture, increase contrast slightly and "highlight midtones"

I think my nicest pictures has derived using this method. Eg.:

http://home6.inet.tele.dk/hrj/dubbel-cluster.htm (Color ex.)

In other cases with lots of stars, an extreme contrast works fine. Eg.:
http://home6.inet.tele.dk/hrj/ngc7000.htm

But it is also a matter of "taste" how you prefer it...

Very nice image!

Have you tried to reduce the grain in the background and increase contrast
with the comet?
Smoothing out the grain and increasing contrast can be difficult to do with
loosing the tail.
