Hi,
After having pushed a lot
of rolls of E-6 I think that two major things happen when you push E-6
films:
1. The tonal balance opens up and the
blue in the shadows becomes less.
2. Shadow detail increases
significantly.
This last element is what you
should be concerned with... black on a chrome simply means there is nothing
there... it's like clipping the blacks in a bad scan. We normally never pushed
beyond two stops... after two stops grain started to show up and there wasn't
much more gained in real detail, just a washing out of the D-max. If you can't
get it with a two stop push, expose more.
There have been many
attempts to increase the speed of E-6 films into uncharted territory by using
developers like Acufine first ... but everything that I ever saw looked pretty
rough. A two stop push is your best bet IMHO... smooth results and a significant
gain in detail.
