Re: [APML] Prime Focus AP: what can I expect?

Hi Mike,

Although I've only been shooting for a year now, I do have
some experience with an 8" lx-10.  I'm not sure if the
lx-90 mount is sturdier than the lx-10...but assuming
its a similar mount / tripod...here's my 2 cents.

>LX-90 off-axis autoguided with Pictor 201XT
No experience with 201xt.  But I've read posts about people
having some difficulties with it.  Others have reported
excellent results with it.

>use f/6.3 focal reducer for deep sky
shooting at 1200mm will make all aspects
of shooting easier.

>limited dark site
hutech lps will help out.

>Nikon F3 camera with 'D' screen and 8x Loupe
You might also want to add a ke focuser.

>Will the use of vibration isolation pads make a difference
Never used them...but I suspect they would only help.

>Should I counterbalance the weight of the camera
definitely.  I used the losmandy counterweight set.

My experiences...
Although I had some reasonable success with my lx-10 mount,
my g-11 makes things 10X easier.  Among other issues, I had a frustrating time
maintaining a polar alignment.  This is primarily due to the lack
of rigidity and the clumsy latitude/altitude adjustment config.
(again, your lx-90 mount may be a bit different)
In summary.. expect some frustrating moments.  but don't despair..
it can be done with acceptable results.  btw, most of the trouble lies
in the mount/tripod.  My 8" ota's optics and mechanics are pretty
descent.
