[APML] Nikon TC-201 teleconverter: any good for AP?

Hi list,
I've recently come across a used Nikon 2X teleconverter, in mint condition, 
for about $160. Is it worth the money and, above all, can it be used for 
some serious deep-sky piggyback work? I would like to mount it onto my 
300mm (f/2.8) Tamron lens+F3 body, thus yielding 600 mm f/5.6.

Anybody have any experience / advice with such a setup?
