You *can* do a drift alignment without seeing Polaris. You only need
to get the RA axis pointed roughly north to get started. The closer
it points, the better, but you can be off by 10-20 degrees and still
get the job done. It may take some time, but it can be done. The
first time I tried to do this from my porch in Forest Hills (Queens,
NYC), I did not have a compass and could not see Polaris. It took me
close to an hour to get something good enough to do short shots.
After marking the location of the tripod legs on the porch, I can now
do a pretty good alignment in a 1/2-hour.
