I just read a science article on the NASA science web
site
about the current phenomena hitting South America.
They called it a Kelvin wave and it's possibly a
precursor to El Nino, but it's not a confirmed deal
yet. The article said that El Nino happens when the
trade winds stall out for a long period of time and
the higher level warmer seas of the western pacific
slop back across to the east and hit North and South
America. The Kelvin Wave is the first beginnings of
this phenomena when the trades stall out just long
enough for a few 100 kilometer long wave to come back
across the Pacific. They happen periodically not just
on El Nino years. But, it so happens that this Kelvin
wave is pretty big and they haven't seen one this big
since the last El Nino.
So they think it may be an El Nino year but not
positive yet.
