I don't think the Orion store is open any longer in San Francisco...there is one in Cupertino (about an 45 minutes south of San Francisco), and Orion's headquarters is in Watsonville, about 90 miles south of SF.

He may want to visit Scope City which is in San Francisco, a few blocks from Pier 39 if I recall correctly.  They have a pretty wide selection of equipment.

About an hour's drive east out of San Francisco is Lumicon in Livermore, if he is interested in astrophotography equipment.
