[APML] (OT) String theory?

Hey all,

I have not done much reading on the subjects of particle physics, their
interactions and 'theories of everything' in quite a few years (1995 or
96, I'd guess). When last I did, 'string' and 'superstring' theories
were presented, but still had some holes to overcome. I saw a show on
the Discovery channel the other night that gave a more promising
outlook for these ideas. I'd like to poll the collective intelligence
here and ask if there are any suggestions for a good modern, up-to-date
overview of this subject. Writings that avoid heavy doses of math
preferred. 8-)
