Just out of curiosity. What OS are you using? This question is for anyone
using the ST4 with a laptop.

Jason, I connect my st4 to my laptop with a USB to serial converter.  works
great and is cheap. 
Alternately, as a suggestion, maybe you need a null modem on your serial
line.
