[APML] OT: IC 1396
ALOHA,
This is just for fun. It's an OT because the images were not taken by films
(but by photographic plates). :)
I'm involved in a project using a near-IR camera on our 2-m telescope
to take some pretty pictures. This near-IR camera has 4k*4k pixels
and is
currently the largest near-IR camera in the world. It's also the prototype
IR camera that will be used by the Next Generation Space Telescope.
In its testing phase, people want to use it to take some nice pictures to
showcase its ability.
In order to simulate what will we see, I downloaded some public-available
images from the internet and make some false-color pictures. IC 1396 is
the one I particularly like. The near-IR portion of the image nicely shows
the stars embeded in the dark clouds. The image is in:

Move your mouse on and off to see the visible light and near-IR light
images.
In the real image of this project, we will perhaps use visible light images
from CFHT (a 4-m telescope on Mauna Kea). The final image should have
a much greater depth and much higher resolution, comparing to the ones
here made from small telescopes. Indeed, from some of you guys, I
already saw images far superior to the ones taken by Palomar.
We can still have some fun even if we don't have images of our own, right?
Cheers,
Wei-Hao
