This may be a little OT but since we're discussing bit depth.......

Does anyone know how many bits are lost to sky fog in a typical CCD 
camera, or maybe a range? I could easily see losing at least several of 
the LSBs to sky fog. Then there's all those calibration frames you have 
to subtract out.

Maybe, a CCD camera really only has 8 - 10 bits equivalent after all 
the loses! <VBG> That's probably the boat Rob is in. ;-)
