Re: [APML] Long term data storage (WAS: O.T.: batch conversion ofTiff toJPG)

Kodak has done a lot of research related to archival storage of CDs.
(And the winner is...Kodak! Caveat emptor.) Actually, they have seemed
to take archival CD storage very seriously over the past several years.
They expect a lot of people will want to permanently archive scanned
slides and photos, and of course want to be able to sell people the
CDs they'll use.

Here's a note about Kodak's CD-R Gold Ultima, their best:

     http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/faqs/faq1632.shtml

Kodak claims a 100-year warranty under ordinary household/office
conditions for this CD.

Printing a label on a CD can generate enough heat to deteriorate the
recording. Rimage makes transfer CD labelers that are low heat. I don't
know if anyone is lower-heat than Rimage. As of a few years ago when
I looked into this closely, Rimage seemed to make the lowest-impact
labelers.

Writing labels on CDs with markers is not a good idea for long-term
storage. It would be hard to predict the effect of marker chemicals
on the recorded CD surface over a long period of time.
