Hey Ken...
This was also observed during the 1874 and 1882 events, with even better equipment. Also, the US Naval Observatory photographic plates from these two years recorded the phenomenon. Sadly, of some 10,000 plates recorded during these two transits, only 11 are known to survive... none of which show the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th contacts.
