RE: [APML] [OT] full frame DSLR
I'm using a 2-3 year-old Sony DSCF707 which is not DSLR, but is doing me
very well for light pollution photos. The built-in zoom is (in 35mm frame
equiv) about 38mm to 190mm.
For my light pollution exposures, I find ISO 400 @ f/2.8 @ 10 seconds works
well. That gives an unmanipulated image that is very close to what the
dark-adapted eye perceives. You can check out some of my LP images under
http://home.xnet.com/~klappal/FoxValleyLightPollution.html.
Any of the current DSLRs will give you a couple more stops of film speed and
longer timed exposures and/or Bulb settings. An observing companion
recently got the Canon D300 Rebel, but I've only been involved with him one
session, and haven't looked it his output.

Subject: [APML] [OT] full frame DSLR
Hi,
A professor in our institute came to me and asked for advise on
DSLR. He needs very wide-angle so he prefers full frame ones.
(I told him that EOS10D and Nikon D70 are nice but he doesn't
like their APS sizes.)
Among those full-frame DSLRs (EOS 1D Mark II, EOS 1Ds, Nikon D...?),
which one is best for long exposure? He doesn't care much about
H-alpha sensitivity. He will use this camera to evaluate the
light pollution in Hawaii. (Yes, we do have light pollution.)
Any suggestion is appreciated.
