I think that astrophotography could be see from to point of view : a competitive activity, where i want to take "the best images" always referenced by the work of other, and the second option, to personal satisfaction. I do astrophotography with the two points of view in mind, but too much bias to the second option. And i think that still is possible to do good job with "modest equipment" under $1000 US. Armed with a webcam and a 20 cm reflector telescope, you can get world class images, all you need is patience to hope for a good seeing night and skill to process the image (and a sky as like i have in Chile, is welcome ;-). And in the field of film, armed with modest equipment and choosing a good scenary, you can get nice photos, some example that I remember is Wally Pacholka. I think that film is still alive, and that one can produce fine images, armed with new generations of powerfull software, like excellent PinInsight, having a little patience and learni
